Peltogyne took the goblins away from the village so that the farmers wouldn't be concerned about collusion. Ardour and Lorrin led the talks with the townspeople. There was some confusion about why the group would come to help if they weren't being rewarded and they weren't guardsmen. In this setting, I decided that the world was still comparatively new and that adventurers and adventuring wasn't an established tradition or career path. The leader of Grund's Vale told them the village didn't have anything to reward them with as the goblins had taken everything, but Ardour suggested that they supply him with a firstborn child as an apprentice.
The leader has a son named Friedel, a gawky blonde young teenager, and he is hesitantly offered as Ardour's apprentice. There's some debate in the group about the ethics of this, but Phil (in character? Out? I wasn't sure) explains that taking apprentices is a reasonable thing for a spellcaster to do. Lorrin, definitely in character, agrees with this logic and everyone else decides that they are comfortable with it as well after Ardour explains he'll have to come back for the kid at a later time. Friedel is in full hero worship mode and having none of that though.
Meanwhile, the goblins are both basically at about whiney toddler level of behavior and intelligence, but Peltogyne handles them well and offers the whinier one their "cloak of whooshing" as a sop to quiet them.
The leader give the group basic directions to the goblin cave and Pel meets them on the way, goblins in tow. The one has donned the cloak (turquoise with a stylized lotus border) and christened himself "Captain Whoosh".
I don't think I liked how the gnomes turned out. I lifted the cave system from Icespire Peak (Gnomengarde) and ran it almost completely as written. Which means that the gnomes were pretty damn near just comic relief. Very circular conversations, blah blah blah. Anyway, if you want to know how it went, read the module.
Eventually Kaupu opened the door to the king's quarters and they have a conversation with the kings. The free king wants the shapeshifter dealt with and won't let the goblins move back in. He wants them to go to the temple of the god of logic to ask what should be done.
The group finds and dispatches the mimic (part of the module), and that's where we stopped.
